Zeeland, Michigan-based Gentex Corporation announced on February 1, 2023, that it plans to open a satellite production facility that will bring 50 new jobs to the Madison Square neighborhood of Grand Rapids.

Gentex is a technology company and long-time supplier of electro-optical products for the global automotive, aerospace, and fire protection industries. The company is Ottawa County’s largest employer, with over 5,500 team members working at its manufacturing campus in Zeeland and nearby lakeshore facilities.

The decision to locate in Madison Square came after months of working in partnership with Amplify GR. “One of our goals is to help ensure neighbors and communities benefit from economic expansion, specifically through job opportunities and wealth creation,” said Amplify GR Executive Director Jon Ippel. “We are passionate about this work — our staff works collaboratively with companies like Gentex to create innovative ways to maximize their investments in the Madison Square and Boston Square areas and throughout the community.”

“Rising transportation costs make commuting increasingly difficult, so if Gentex wants to recruit employees from Grand Rapids, we need to be here,” said Gentex President and CEO Steve Downing. “And by locating a satellite plant and creating jobs in a neighborhood near city center, our goal is to strengthen not only Gentex, but also the surrounding community, and we look forward to future opportunities to do so.”

Gentex’s Grand Rapids facility will be located at 355 Cottage Grove, SE. The building is currently undergoing renovations, with production slated to begin in late May. The facility will produce sub-assembly components for Gentex’s HomeLink product, which consists of vehicle-integrated buttons for operating garage doors and other home automation devices. When fully operational, the facility will operate two shifts and employ 50 team members engaged in light assembly, warehousing, and logistics.

In early spring, Gentex plans to conduct a series of job fairs and community events designed to introduce the company to the surrounding neighborhood. Those interested in employment at the Cottage Grove facility can learn more at www.gentex.com/GR

Over the past couple of years, Gentex has been systematically addressing some of the region’s largest barriers to employment. In 2021, the company launched Spanish-speaking assembly lines to provide expanded employment opportunities for West Michigan’s growing Hispanic community. Today, nearly 190 Spanish-speaking employees work on various production lines throughout the company.

In November, Gentex announced plans to open a first-of-its-kind childcare and preschool designed to provide its employees with access to quality, affordable, on-site daycare. The facility, scheduled to break ground this spring, will be located on Gentex’s Zeeland campus. It’s being designed to accommodate the children of both first and second-shift workers, with a capacity target of up to 250 children per shift.

The Future Community Hub in Boston Square!

While we unveiled renderings, reviewed plans and heard invaluable feedback from neighbors for the future community hub, we had so much fun seeing beautiful people, gathering together and connecting over food from Street Chef Shaw, Dee Mobley BBQ and Tish LoveDa Kids Ice Cream Truck. The fun was made complete by neighbor, DJ Blaze, who provided an incredible musical soundscape and spun the best jams from the 90s – 2000s.

Neighbors have voiced their desire to see a community space where they can go and gather for years. The future hub and the organizations that will provide services within it, like the early learning center with Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative, were created through a collective design process with neighbors.

This open house was a glimpse into the future of what a designated space to find respite could be like – a living room for the community! The future community hub will also provide a health clinic, multi-purpose room, a community café, shared workspace and a second floor full of agencies and non-profits that will provide wrap-around services to families to increase access to resources and education that will improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. This community hub will be a front porch for the generations of neighbors to come!

Two days following the open house, architects on the project were already working on updates to the hub from the feedback taken from neighbors! Go Team!

The Boston Square Together project will soon activate its first community space!

Formerly Good Shepherd Auto, the building at 1445 Kalamazoo Ave. (at the corner of Oakdale St.) has been empty for more than a decade.

Now it has found a new purpose and will soon open as Kzoo Station: A Community Kitchen + Eatery! For years, neighbors have asked for increased opportunity to build or launch more black-, brown-, and women-owned businesses. Simultaneously residents voiced the need for more local food options that reflect the neighborhood.

Named together with residents and community stakeholders, Kzoo Station will be run by Spring GR and offer neighbors access, resources, and learning opportunities within a commercial kitchen to test or grow their food businesses. Future plans are being created for a retail space that will allow customers to buy the hyper-local food cooked up in the kitchen.

Construction began in October 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in the Spring of 2022. For more information or to submit an interest form through SpringGR, go to springgr.com/kzoo-station.

Wednesday, July 14, 2021, marked the celebration of two things: The groundbreaking of a beautiful new building coming to 1601 Madison Ave. that sat empty for the last 20+ years. Plus, a pathway that has been widened for neighbors to access good-paying jobs – something that this area used to be known for – as jobs are now coming back to the Madison Square area thanks to MCPc.

“One of the first relationships I made when starting this work was with Mr. Burl McLiechey,” explained Jon Ippel, executive director at Amplify GR at the groundbreaking event for 1601 Madison Ave. “He lives around the corner and has been a resident for more than 60 years… Burl is one person who continuously reminds me that relationship is at the center of everything we do – from jobs and entrepreneurship, housing, education, and community well-being – it’s the relationships that will build community in the long run.”

Jon Ippel, executive director at Amplify GR talks with local media about the significance of the project
